A Conversation about Heaven

Sometimes I'm amazed at the things Samuel comes up with. We were in the car today and had this conversation:

Samuel: Mommy, where's heaven?
Me: Up in the sky
Samuel: Can we go to heaven?
Me: Yes
Samuel: When?
Me: When God comes to get us. We have to wait for him to get it ready for us first.
Samuel: He's building us a house?
Me: Well, he's making a place for us to live.
Samuel: Is God in heaven?
Me: Yes
Samuel: Is Jesus in heaven?
Me: Yes
Samuel: Is his majesty in heaven?
Me: (a little confused because I'm not sure who he's talking about) Well, God is the king is that what you mean
Samuel: Does he have a crown
Me: Yes
Samuel: Can I have a crown?
Me: When you get to heaven, God will give you a crown
Samuel: Can we go right now?
Me: Well, remember we have to wait till God gets it ready for us.
Samuel: OK

Little Hands Towards Heaven - Unit 3

This unit was God Blesses Abraham. Our fingerplay this week was called "Clippity, Clippity" Samuel liked acting out the rhyme, but we didn't get to pretend to be any animals this week and he kept wanting to go back and do the rhymes from the last 2 units, so we did. We also worked on learing the Letter C this week. Our first story was about Abraham leaving his home behind. I told Samuel that Abraham had to go far, far away and Samuel said, "Like Uncle Jon" Then we worked on the Number Three page for our counting book. Samuel colored 3 suitcases to demonstrate that Abraham and Sarah packed their things and left home. Then we cut them out and glued them into the book.

The next day we read about how Abraham and Lot got to the end of their journey and Lot was selfish and took the best land, but God took care of Abraham anyway. We also made a Letter C out of cotton balls. Samuel loves anything that involves glue!

The third day we read about God's promise to make Abraham's descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. We made a big C on the floor out of masking tape and Samuel had lots of fun driving his cars all over it.

For our art project, we painted stars on black construction paper using a crumpled paper towel and white paint. Then Samuel colored Abraham's tent and we glued that to the page.

The next day we read about the three angels who came to visit Abraham and Sarah and told them they would have a son by that time the next year. Then we worked on our C worksheet.

The final day we ready about God testing Abraham by asking him to sacrifice Isaac. We also looked at baby pictures and talked about how Samuel is growing up just like Isaac grew up. Samuel loves to look at any kind of pictures of himself so he thought this was lots of fun.

Batman and a Butterfly

I forgot to post these last week. Last Saturday, Adam went for a run. He found this injured butterfly on the way back and brought it back for Samuel. Samuel was so excited because he loves the butterfly garden at the aquarium, but they never land on him because he won't hold still. This one couldn't fly so Samuel could hold it as much as he wanted. After a few minutes, Samuel and Adam took it outside and let it go.

Also, don't you love Samuel's Batman PJ's? I found them on clearance at Wal-mart and he loves them because they have a "cate" (aka cape)

Looking ahead to Fall

On Sunday, they announced that school would start back next week and so would many of our Fall activities. I came home and got looking at our calendar and we are going to have a busy Fall! Adam and I have started working with the youth at church and will be with them on Sunday and Wednesday nights. We also participate in a LIFE group (small group) and will be meeting over lunch right after church each Sunday. Samuel will be starting AWANA on Wednesday nights as a Cubbie. We also signed him up to play MVP soccer at our church. He will have one practice night each week and then a game each Saturday through October. And that is just our church activities! I am going to be going to a MOPS group that meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday. Samuel and I are looking forward to meeting some other stay at home moms and kids! Samuel is also going to be taking a preschool class through our homeschool group on Monday afternoons. Add in homeschooling Tuesday through Friday and storytime at the library once a week and we are going to be one busy family! You should be seeing lots of pictures and stories about everything that's going on!

Little Hands Toward Heaven - Unit 2

I apologize in advance because this will probably be a long post. I found a cool new thing called Blurb, http://www.blurb.com/ where you can take your blog posts and turn them into a scrapbook. So, I'll probably be a little longwinded on our school posts from now on because at the end of the year I'm going to have them made into a scrapbook to document each year of school.

Anyway, on to the fun stuff. This unit was on The Earth and the Flood. We did a fun fingerplay each day called "Noah's Big Boat". Samuel loved getting to act like all the different animals on the ark. We started this unit last week by reading about how God told Noah to build the ark. Also, since our letter of the week is the Letter B, we read a devotional about what it means to behave. Samuel knew all the answers to the questions, now to see if he puts it into practice! For our Counting Book, we added the Number Two page. We traced Samuel's hands and then he colored them and talked about how Noah built the ark with his two hands.

On Tuesday we read about how God sent 2 of each animal to get on the ark with Noah. Since we're working on the Letter B this week, I drew a letter B for him to paint. He loves to paint because he gets to make a mess!

Samuel had tons of fun on Wednesday! We read about Noah taking his family into the boat and it raining for 40 days and 40 nights. Then, for a science project, we gathered some items from around the house and dropped them in a tub of water to see which ones would sink and which ones would float like Noah's ark.

On Thursday, we talked about how God sent a rainbow to Noah and his family as a reminder that He loved them and would never flood the earth again. We tore up some different colored construction paper and then Samuel glued them onto a black piece I had cut in the shape of a rainbow. He loves anything that involves glue so he really enjoyed this art project!

On Friday, we moved on to the Tower of Babel. We read about how the people were proud and tried to build a tower up to God so he stopped the building by causing them all to speak different languages. We used blocks to count and see how high of a tower we could build before it would fall down. We also made a giant B on the floor out of masking tape and covered it with blocks to learn the shape of the letter. Samuel was supposed to practice writing Letter B's but he decided it was too hard and wanted to make A's instead. Oh well, he'll learn one day!
